:: Bring on 2011!! ::

Happy 2011, everyone!! I hope 2010 brought you all as much joy and blessings as it has for me and RJ!

Merry Christmas! May you get all the rawhides you wish for this holiday season!

Things have been so crazy this past quarter and it has been so long since I’ve blogged! I used to pop out cutesy and interesting posts in a snap like every other day, and now I feel like I don’t even know how to write for an audience other than grad school professors anymore.

All this said, here are the fond memories and blessings of 2010!

1. I started my Master’s at Loma Linda University in Marital and Family Therapy, and I am LOVING the program, my cohort, and my professors!!  I have never been among such helpful, non-competitive, and generous colleagues before! And not that I don’t absolutely love my Nav family, but it’s nice to have community and friendships outside of Navs.

2. Along those lines, being a student again has reminded me of the hardship of being a student while walking with Christ and gives me a greater appreciation for what our students at UC Riverside Navs go through. I used to always tell the girls, “You guys need to eat, of course you have time to meet up!!” but I’ve learned how hard it is to perform well in school while investing in others and being invested in. These students are powerhouses because I wussed out big time this quarter!

3. Last January, our house got broken into. Is it a fond memory?  Not really, but we saw firsthand how everything Scripture says about God being our shield and protector had a new and real meaning in the wake of it, not just the nice “Oh, God is my shield and protector” way that it was before. We also witnessed the love, support, and community from our students, people around us, and churches who generously prayed for us, replaced lost items without being asked, and gave money to replace what insurance didn’t cover. Not only that, but in doing so, God got rid of a lot of things we didn’t need to support us financially in a really tough financial season. Though our Navigators account was in deficit for most of the year, we were never in debt, never in want, never in need. God provided for us and showed us more of who He is through the break in and we consider ourselves blessed.

4. The Navs at UCR really took on a form and personality! The fall of 2009 was the beginning of our second year here, and things still seemed a bit precarious. God took what little we had and established it into something firm and raised up some key players in our ministry who take on more than they are asked.

5. The girls I’ve been investing in since our first year here have taken off spiritually!  They are absolutely fantastic and amazing, and I just love them to bits! It’s neat to see Scripture come alive in their lives and the truth and reality of God’s love pop out at them.

6. We got our sweet, adorable puppy Daisy, who has been one of the greatest blessings of last year.  She has the sweetest demeanor and will befriend anyone who comes along, lets kids pull her every which way without us fearing she’ll attack them, and cuddles anyone who will let her. She has been a comfort and companion to me when RJ travels out of town!

Daisy and her brother Cody

7. My brother graduated and is a freshman at UC Irvine, going to Navs, and living with some Navs guys!  This is a milestone because I feel like my brother is my kid or something. I’m super proud of the man he has become!

8. RJ’s sister, Rachel, graduated from college and we were able to surprise her with a visit to Eugene!

Rachel's Graduation from the U of O

9. RJ’s mom, aunts, and sister came for a quickie visit to Disneyland just last month. What a fun time!! His Aunt Joy is the ultimate Disney tour guide!!

10. Marriage is just all the more sweeter. I can’t believe all these celebrity divorces after two years of marriage (or even 7 weeks!) . I am having more and more fun with RJ each day!  I mean, the first year I would have said it was easy peasy, but now in retrospect, that was probably our hardest year and it wasn’t even that hard!!  I am so blessed with a thoughtful, open, honest, generous, servant of a husband, who just happens to be good looking too.  =) Lemme tell you, after a long day of classes, it is AMAZING to come home to a clean home and a nice dinner!

Me and RJ at a good friend's wedding

11. RJ and I were the first ever married emcees at the Sunland Navigators Regional Conference in Pine Valley this past year!  It was SOOO fun to serve together and to feed off each other on stage. There’s this comfort level in emceeing with your spouse in that you know what they’re thinking and where they are going, this natural flow. People have seen me in action before, but I’m just so glad people got to see RJ for all the funnies he is!

12. I went on my first ever cruise!  I can’t say I liked it.  But I like the idea of it.

Family Cruise to Baja Mexico

13. We started this insane exercise regimen called Insanity.  We’re not even following it to the t, and it is crazy!  Now usually, you can find me laying down on the couch eating potato chips, so I totally died the first few times we did Insanity, but RJ and I both notice that we are a lot stronger than we were before.  I’ll keep you posted on our progress!

14. I know we moved into our house in November of 2009, but it feels like it was just last year!  We’ve had so much fun having students and friends over and opening the home God gave us to others!

15. I got a new sewing machine! I’m hoping to make amazing pieces to wear and be able to hem and tailor stuff myself!  Project Runway, whaaaaaat??

16. I got over my weird white people phobia more. I’ll explain this more in depth in another post, but it’s been good!

17. We had our first UCR Navs spring break trip camping!  What an amazing time in nature, enjoying God’s creation and one another’s company!  We had lots of camping newbs turned believers!

Sequoia National Forest

18. A really good friend and one of the girls I discipled throughout college and my first couple years on staff got married this year!  We used to talk about boys and stuff, so it’s great to know she’s found a great catch in Jimmyboy!

Me and buttahcup!!

19. Two years later, I still fit into my wedding dress!

20. RJ and I were able to serve as retreat counselors at Chinese Bible Church of San Diego’s annual family retreat!  It’s my first time since I’ve graduated college! I was also able to lead a workshop for the ladies on dating and relationships.

CBCSD Family Retreat 2010

21. I chopped off my hair to the shortest it’s been since sophomore year in college…and I did it mostly by myself!!  I definitely can’t wait to have long hair again.

Hair chopped!

22. We started our own vegetable garden in the backyard, and are starting to produce sugar snap peas!

23. Usually before a major endeavor (ie missions trips, going on staff with the Navigators, etc) God gives me a promise verse. I was so happy when I stumbled upon Isaiah 50:4, the verse and promise I believe God wants me to cling to as I’m getting my Master’s in Marital and Family Therapy. It goes as follows:

“The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.”

On that note, moving into resolutions for 2011!

1. In the busyness of school, ministry, and interning, I don’t want to forget time with Jesus!  Even if it’s just one verse or 5 minutes with Him, I want to be wakened morning by morning to His will, so I draw upon His strength and not my own to better serve others and be sustained.

2. Keep working out and making healthy choices for my life and body!  This includes eating out less, drinking more water, and exercising consistently.

3. I don’t want to lose myself as I meet with clients, to lose hope, to forget why I wanted to be a therapist in the first place. With every client, I want to bring Jesus, whether or not they know it.

4. Stay in better touch with friends. I just suck at it.

5. Love, serve, and encourage others more, complain less.

6. Be more involved with Navs at UCR for the rest of the year than I was last quarter. Transitions and balancing acts are hard!

7. Blog more consistently!!  I want to aim for once a week at least!!

So there you have it, folks.  Thanks for reading, and here’s a little somethin’ somethin’ for making it all the way through!

:: Happy 2010! ::

Here is my yearly “goodbye old year” and “hello new year” post!

Highlights and Events of 2009:

1. Kicked off an amazing and fruitful ministry at UC Riverside, and are blessed with regulars who we absolutely love and adore!

2. I re-enrolled as a post-”bachelorette” at Cal State San Bernardino to take classes I need to apply for my Master’s in clinical counseling. Go Coyotes!…?

3. RJ and I have gotten into a sweet groove of balancing ministry and marriage, having worked out a ton of the newlywed kinks the first few months of marriage. We’re better communicators, we are more mindful of the other’s needs and desires, we see Jesus more through each other…it’s just what I imagined partnership in marriage and in Christ to be! And it’s SO MUCH fun!! =)

4. RJ himself is quite a gift to me. He is patient, loving, kind, thoughtful, he speaks truth when I need to hear it, he has so much depth to him, loves Jesus and others well, sees the best in others, and the longer I’m with him the more I fall in love with him. Plus he is good looking and manly. =)

5. We went to our first marriage retreat in 2009 and were blessed by the knowledge and experience and wisdom of others who have been on the road longer than we have.

6. I found a delicious chocolate chip cookie recipe that is AMAZING. Chewy, like store bought ones! Jenny made me make them 3 times when we were in San Diego on break.

7. I threw up three times in 2009. I haven’t thrown up since 2002 or something! Twice was food poisoning, once was the flu. Booooo! But I’m slowly getting over my phobia of throwing up.

8. We were able to go “home” to Rochester, NY! Well, it’s my hometown anyways. We were able to visit Weggies, eat garbage plates (yuuuuuuuuuuuuuum!!), and I was able to show RJ my old house, high school, and church, not to mention catch up with some really amazing people!

9. RJ and I were asked to be my youth group’s summer retreat speakers! My church and another church in the area joined forces to make a super retreat, and the topic was Inside Out: Gospel Transformation. What an honor! And we had such a wonderful time with the youth and were so welcomed by them. And lemme tell you, they are WAY more well-behaved than the youth when I was in youth group! We were so naughty.

10. We went on a mini-vacation to Toronto, where my family used to vacation at least once or twice a year. I took RJ to all the places we used to go to. We visited the Royal Ontario Museum and saw the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Toronto Zoo, the CN Towers, watched a Blue Jay’s game, went to Chinatown, Pacific Mall, and the Ontario Science Museum. We also stopped by Niagara Falls on the way up, and I was finally able to go on the Maid in the Mist, the boat that takes you right by the falls!

11. We were able to lead a team at a Summer Training Program on Marriage, Sex, Dating, and the Gospel at Cal State San Marcos for 2 weeks. It was way fun, and we learned a lot and were able to process through a lot of valuable insights!

12. My grandpa passed away on Thanksgiving. =(

13. I made it halfway up the C hike at UCR…this year I’m hoping to make it all the way up!

14. I completed the Cheeburger Cheeburger challenge! Whooo!!! Success!! =)

15. I learned how to make barbeque pulled pork. I can’t believe how simple and cheap it is, I feel ripped off all those times I paid for a barbeque pulled pork sandwich!

16. We became credit card debt free!! FREEDOM!!! =)

17. We have babies, thanks to Alli. =)

18. Did I mention we’re published in The Knot: Southern California Spring/Summer 2010 magazine??? =) =)

19. I got my hair permed for the first time EVER. Will probably do it again too!

20. We dressed up as cows to get a free meal at Chick Fil A. Yes, those are baby bottle nipples taped to styrofoam plates. What now!

21. We went to the weddings of four couples we love and adore! Two couples were RJ’s cousins!

22. Saw Common perform at UCR…you know…the guy from Terminator Salvation?? And Ben Lee.

23. Roadtripped with 11 students to Sacramento in October…crazy fun!

24. Played violin with me pa at Good Friday service.

25. Did we mention we bought a house?? =) God, in His grace, decided to bless us with the perfect little house! We were able to see God throughout the entire process, and know this is exactly where He wants us! Check out our updated video tour!

26. I was able to start using our Crockpot and KitchenAid mixer, along with unpacking tons of other wedding gifts we weren’t able to use because of storage! I LOOOOVE it!!

27. We went back to Destin, FL for our collegiate staff conference. What a beautiful location!

28. RJ was able to bring out the inner handyman that was dormant while we lived in the apartment complex because now we don’t have a Tony (the handyman at the apartment) to call when we have problems! RJ has hooked up our gas washer and dryer and fixed a leaky bath spigot…what a manly man! =)

29. I am continuing to see God’s perfect timing of His plan and will for our lives, and that we just need to be patient and wait for Him to work and not try to make things happen by settling for less than the best.

30. As I grow older, my view of God’s love has expanded, as has my view of my depravity…resulting in my view of God’s grace to increase all the more.

Resolutions for 2010:

1. Health: Always health! But after being sick so long after food poisoning, I’m realizing I need to strengthen my immune system and be proactive about my health! I’m resolving to be more active, to eat better, to stop drinking Diet Coke (I’ve been clean for about 3 weeks now!), and to drink more water. I’m doin pretty well so far!

2. God: I want to be more consistent in times with Jesus, so I’ve resolved to read the entire New Testament in three months. That’s about 6 pages per day. Now, I’m a pretty slow reader but I’m doing pretty well so far! I also want to get back into journaling daily like I used to and chronicling all of life’s events. A great quote from the staff conference in Sandestin: “Don’t coast on the passions of your youth.” Guilty!

3. Get into grad school!! Well, is this really a resolution? It’s what I hope to see happen in 2010!

4. Encourage more, serve more, love more. No regrets!

5. Keep in better touch with people. I really suck at it!

There are probably many more highlights and events in 2009 that I forgot, and more things I will need to resolve to do, but this is it for now! Hope you stuck with me the entire way through! =) Happy new year!

img_3800

7.  Learned to appreciate that God made people to think and process a lot differently than me…and that I’m not always right.  ;-)

8.  I have become more administrative and detail oriented…I believe that came with marriage and an even more disoriented man.

9.  Witness God provide for RJ and I in mighty ways as we begin our lives together, not only with our entire wedding, but our apartment, our furnishings, and our funding.

10.  Said an exuberant good-bye to long distance!!  No more phone calls after 9pm or seeing each other once every three months!  Or hotel lobby dates for 2 hours after driving for 5 hours.  Or softball coaches looking over our shoulders.  Or endless blubbering at the airport.  Or pent up affection.  Or…well, you get the idea…it’s just better this way.

11.  I learned to surf…well, kind of…thanks Emiliooooo!  =)

12.  Went to Mexico for the first time, which is lame since I live in San Diego!

picture-189

13.  Learned that not all dogs are mean and bite when you touch them…just Oliver.

14.  I no longer NEED to wear make-up when I go anywhere…I choose to, or I choose not to.

15.  Discovered Vanilla Coke Zero!

16.  Taste preference has changed yet again from salty to fruity, slowly but surely.

17.  Went to a tequila factory for the first time!

picture-307

18.  I am more convinced of God’s perfect timing, and His sovereignty in making His children wait for His plan to unfold.

19.  I went scuba diving for the first time ever!

20.  Changed my name legally to Alice Matagora…and saw it a couple months before we were married in Colorado Springs on our donor cards…trippy!

21.  I’m beginning to learn to let go of things I can’t control, and to trust and rely on God more than ever.

22.  Joyfully witnessed four good friends get married, from all eras of my life.

23.  Redefined forgiveness as trusting that the blood of Jesus covers the sins of those who sin against me.

24.  Realizing that I’m a lot more wounded than I thought, and it’s the word of God and His Spirit that breaks the hold of lies and patterns of thinking.

25.  Saw my grandparents from Taiwan again, and got my grandpa to laugh uncontrollably…I’ve never seen him do that!

26.  RJ and I found out that conflicts that existed before we were married don’t disappear just because we’re married.  =)

Now I’m positive there are more amazing firsts and events that happened in 2008, but as it is 1:24am, I can’t think of them now.  Moving on…

2009 New Year’s Resolutions:

1.  Fitness – more cardio and weights.  I used to be so in shape…what happened??

2.  Nutrition – multi-vitamins and eating more whole foods

3.  Stop the occasional cussing…completely!

4.  Complain less, encourage more.

5.  Make time with God a priority, over my husband and over ministering to others.

6.  Make music more of a priority – violin and guitar.

7.  Let go of things that can’t be changed and move on.

So here’s to 2009!  May it be even richer with blessings than 2008!

Happy New Year!  =)
